The Budget 2008 package will provide funding assistance to the Canterbury Transport Project - a collaborative transport planning partnership initiative between all Canterbury local authorities and Transit New Zealand.
The Canterbury Transport Project steering group report to the Ministry of Transport includes a table showing the costs of a programme beginning in 2007/08. Taking into account the practicalities of beginning a programme at this point in the financial year, the Government has agreed to provide funding based on a programme with the same level of funding starting in 2008/09. The monthly overview of crash statistics for January 2008 have been released. The provisional data shows 35 people died on New Zealand roads in January. This is four fewer than the number of deaths for January 2007.

The Government is seeking submissions on proposed changes to the way fuel consumption information is collected for light vehicles entering New Zealand.
The draft Fuel Consumption Information Rule proposes that importers of light vehicles provide accurate and reliable fuel consumption information and seeks to clarify how this information is collected.

The government has announced a series of initiatives to address climate change, including its proposal for a New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme.
