auckland transport strategic alignment project

In May 2006 Ministers and the Auckland Mayoral Forum met to discuss long term funding for Auckland transport. They decided that, before decisions could be made about funding issues, a common strategic vision for Auckland transport, agreed by political leaders of the Crown and the region, was required.

This led to the Auckland Transport Strategic Alignment Project (ATSAP), the objective of which is to enable political leaders to reach a common (Crown-region) strategic view for the long-term development of Auckland’s land transport system.  Reaching a common strategic view would see the completion of the first phase of the project.  The final phase will examine ways to implement the agreed strategy, and develop mechanisms to maintain ongoing strategic alignment.

Reports

Summary of Current Strategic View (28 July 2006)

The first deliverable of this project is a summary of the region’s current strategic (20-30 year) view for the development of Auckland’s land transport system. The report summarises the 2005 Auckland Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) and other strategic documents.

Draft Common View (12 April 2007)

The second deliverable of the project sets out officials’ recommendations on what should be included in a common (Crown-region) strategic view for the long term development of Auckland’s land transport system.  It is therefore based on the Auckland Regional Land Transport Strategy, but builds on it in a number of areas.

Draft Common View (12 April 2007) (PDF, 657kb)

The report shows that there is a large degree of agreement between Crown and Auckland officials, including that a substantial shift to public transport is needed over the next 30 years, starting immediately.  The report also identifies that a strategic decision needs to be made on the speed at which public transport should be developed over the next 10 years.
