The Government Urban and Economic Development Office (GUEDO) is a cross-government initiative to improve the focus on Auckland-related policy development.
Four government agencies have established a shared policy office in Auckland to improve the incorporation of Auckland perspectives into policy making process, and engagement with Auckland stakeholders.
The four agencies are:
Ministry of Transport
Ministry of Economic Development
Ministry for the Environment
Department of Labour.
The Government Urban and Economic Development Office will:
- work across government to focus on sustainable economic and urban development issues of relevance to Auckland and the nation
- ensure Auckland's needs are reflected in economic and urban development policy
- make it easier for Auckland stakeholders to have input into economic and urban development policy
- improve Auckland stakeholders' access to central government officials.
The office’s joint work programme, led by the Ministry for Economic Development, is bringing an Auckland focus to the government’s economic transformation agenda.
Auckland is one of five key areas for action in the agenda. The others are growing globally competitive firms, world-class infrastructure, education, skills and research and environmental sustainability. The Ministry of Transport is contributing to actions in the other focus areas as well, notably environmental sustainability and world class infrastructure.
In Auckland, work will centre on eight key practical actions including central government engagement in the development of a long term planning and sustainability framework for the region and the review of Auckland’s regional growth strategy.
