March Road Deaths (2008)


The data presented here are provisional. Crash data as at - 7th April 2008.
  • Thirty-four people died on New Zealand roads in March. This is five fewer than the number of deaths for March 2007 and is four fewer than the average March toll for the last five years.

  • To the end of March this year 110 people have died on New Zealand roads. This is 13 more than at the same time last year.
  • In the 12 months to the end of March 2008, 436 people were killed on our roads. This is 44 more than the 12 month toll at the end of March 2007.
  • During March, 16 of the deaths were car or van drivers, 13 were car or van passengers, three were motorcyclists and two were truck drivers.
  • Twenty-eight of the 34 killed were in open road crashes. Sixteen were in single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control of the vehicle or ran off the road and 12 were in head on crashes.
  • Of the 31 vehicle occupants killed, at least 10 were not restrained at the time of the crash.

Note: Preliminary fatal crash reports are submitted within 24 hours of a crash related death. Full injury crash reports are submitted only after the crash investigation is completed, so there is a lag in the reporting of injury crashes.

Trends


Since 1990 the number of vehicles on the road has increased by 51% while Police reported injuries have dropped by 5%, road deaths have dropped by 42% and the number of days spent in hospital as a result of road crashes has dropped by 45%.
