November Road Deaths (2007)

The data presented here are provisional. Crash data as at - 10th December 2007.

  • Forty-one people died on New Zealand roads in November. This is 20 more than the number of deaths for November 2006 and is 12 more than the average November toll for the last five years.

  • To the end of November this year 376 people have died on New Zealand roads. This is 29 more than at the same time last year.
  • In the 12 months to the end of November 2007, 422 people were killed on our roads. This is 34 more than the 12 month toll at the end of November 2006.
  • During November, 17 of the deaths were car or van drivers, 12 were car or van passengers, four were pedestrians, four were motorcyclists, two were truck drivers, one was a cyclist and one was a forklift driver.
  • Thirty-two of the 41 killed were in open road crashes. Twenty-one were in single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control of the vehicle or ran off the road and eight were in head on crashes.
  • Of the 32 vehicle occupants killed, at least 6 were not restrained at the time of the crash.

Deaths are for the 12 months to the end of November 2007. Reported injuries are for the 12 months to the end of May 2007.

Note: Preliminary fatal crash reports are submitted within 24 hours of a crash related death. Full injury crash reports are submitted only after the crash investigation is completed, so there is a lag in the reporting of injury crashes.

Since 1990 the number of vehicles on the road has increased by 50% while Police reported injuries have dropped by 8%, road deaths have dropped by 44% and the number of days spent in hospital as a result of road crashes has dropped by 45%.
