The Ministry produces a number of key strategies in order to work towards our vision of leading transport solutions for New Zealand.
NZTS and GPS
The New Zealand Transport Strategy was launched in 2008. It set defined targets for the transport sector and actions to achieve those targets over the next 30 years. This is the first time specific targets have been set for the whole sector, and they are detailed in two key documents: the New Zealand Transport Strategy 2008 (NZTS) and the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport Funding (GPS).
The Ministry also released the Transport Monitoring Indicator Framework. The framework measures progress against the objectives, sector outcomes and targets in the NZTS and the GPS. It is a tool for informing and evaluating transport-related policies and strategies.
Road Safety to 2010 Strategy
Road Safety to 2010 provides a direction for road safety in New Zealand and describes the results the government wants to achieve by 2010. It is an important component in achieving the New Zealand Transport Strategy goal of an affordable, integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable transport system.
In 2009, the Ministry of Transport and our road safety partners have commenced work on a new road safety strategy to 2020. Keep an eye on our website for further details.
