The Ministry produces and contributes to a number of key strategies and plans in order to work towards our vision of shaping transport in New Zealand.

Connecting New Zealand

Connecting New Zealand: a summary of the government’s policy direction for transport is a document that summarises the government’s overall policy direction for transport.

GPS

The Government Policy Statement on Land Transport Funding (GPS) sets out the government’s priorities for expenditure from the National Land Transport Fund over the next 10 years. It sets out how funding is allocated between activities such as road safety policing, state highways, local roads and public transport.

Safer Journeys

In March 2010, the government released its new ten year strategy designed to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads over the next decade.

Safer Journeys is a strategy to guide improvements in road safety over the period 2010–2020. The long term goal for road safety in New Zealand is set out in its vision: "A safe road system increasingly free of death and serious injury".

It replaces the previous Road Safety to 2010 strategy.

National Infrastructure Plan version 2

The second National Infrastructure Plan (NIP) was released on Monday 4 July 2011. The Plan outlines the government’s 20 year vision for New Zealand’s infrastructure.

The NIP builds on the first plan released in March 2010, by outlining the government’s vision for New Zealand’s infrastructure and the role infrastructure will play in supporting our economic growth. The overall purpose of this version of the Plan is to improve investment certainty for businesses by giving confidence over current and future infrastructure provision.

The Ministry of Transport, in partnership with the NZ Transport Agency, assisted the National Infrastructure Unit with developing the transport chapter in the NIP. The chapter assesses the current situation, current work programme and key issues for transport infrastructure.
