Nature of data Oil spills reported to Maritime NZ.

the spiller to notify either Maritime New Zealand (through the Rescue Co-ordination Centre) or the
appropriate regional council, by the quickest means possible.

Quality of the data The drop off in the number of spills from 2008 to 2009 was because in 2008 one offshore installation had a problem reducing
the hydrocarbon ppm (parts per million) in their produced water.
Any produced water discharge over 100 ppm is to be reported as a marine oil spill.
