Nature of data Quantitative, survey-based.
Data source Ongoing New Zealand Household Travel Survey, Ministry of Transport. Sample survey of 2200 households per year (4600 households per year from June 08), running throughout the year. Respondents report all travel in specified two-day period. See www.transport.govt.nz/ongoing-travel-survey-index/ for more information.
Definition A trip chain is a single trip leg, or a series of trip legs which terminates when the person reaches home, work, or stays at a destination for 30 minutes or more. "Cycle" trip chains may include a walking component as well as cycling.
Frequency From 2003, updated annually with four year moving average. Periods run from July to June so 2003-2007 means July 2003 - June 2007.

Quality of the data Survey based. Household Travel Surveys exclude commercial travel, and tend to somewhat underestimate total personal travel. Response rate (households with full responses from all members): 1989/90=75%; 1997/98=75%; Ongoing survey: 65%-70%.
