Core indicator information
Nature of data Quantitative, survey-based.
Source New Zealand Household Travel Survey. Sample survey of 4600 households per year, (2200 prior to July 2008) running throughout the year. Respondents report all travel in specified two-day period. Full responses were received from 70% of eligible households. See www.transport.govt.nz/ongoing-travel-survey-index/ for more information.
Definition Annual km per capita travelled in single occupancy cars, vans, utes and SUVs by residents of main urban areas on weekdays. Excludes work-related travel other than travel to and from work.
Main Urban Areas are defined by Statistics NZ and include population centres of 30,000 or more.
Vehicle occupancy is reported in the survey. The survey is designed to capture household travel only and excludes most commercial and freight travel.
Population is the mean Usually Resident population of main urban areas, derived from Census or Statistics NZ population estimates for the specified period.
Note re 2003-7 and 2004-08 In 2009, the NZ Household Travel Survey dataset was revised to ensure professional driver trips were excluded where possible. This has resulted in revision to the 2003-07 and 2004-08 figures above.
Frequency Updated annually with four year moving average. Periods run from July to June so 2003-2007 means July 2003 - June 2007.
