Commercial Vehicle Fleet Efficiency

The Ministry of Transport has commissioned and undertaken research on the management of fuel efficiency in New Zealand commercial vehicle fleets.

The research found that:

    • better driver and fleet-operator training and fleet management is a very cost-effective way to increase business productivity, maximise fuel savings and reduce accidents
    • the commercial vehicle transport industry currently under-invests in driver training, mainly due to high turn-over in drivers and as a result the potential benefits are not realised
    • the industry is concerned about the lack of robust, independent, reliable, authoritative and accessible information in New Zealand to enable better fleet management
    • other countries already have a number of highly successful programmes in place to realise the benefits from better training and fleet management.
