New Zealand's road safety strategy to 2020

We are preparing a road safety strategy called Safer Journeys to take us through to 2020. In August we launched a discussion document that presents New Zealand's key road safety challenges and outlines more than 60 possible initiatives to address them. Public consultation ran from 18 August 2009 to 02 October 2009.

We are now developing the final strategy. We will be considering the submissions and rankings received during the consultation, as well as road safety research and evidence to make sure the Safer Journeys strategy identifies the right mix of actions for improving New Zealand’s road safety.

Summary of submissions on the Safer Journeys discussion document

Over 1,500 submissions were received and more than 1,200 people ranked their preferred road safety initiatives during the consultation.  Submissions were received from both the public and organisations with an interest in road safety.

To ensure youth feedback was received, the Ministry of Youth Development carried out focus groups and consultation with young people. A report was made on the views and opinions received, and this was considered in summarising submissions.

More information about the release of the strategy will be made available on our website towards the end of this year.
