What does this document tell us?

This document compares the initiatives for the areas of high concern proposed in the Safer Journeys road safety discussion document with road safety actions implemented or being considered in Australia.

Where there is a high degree of similarity between initiatives being implemented or considered in Australia and Safer Journeys initiatives, these are directly compared. Other initiatives are listed separately.

Do the initiatives proposed in the Safer Journeys discussion document match what is being done to improve road safety in Australia?

Many of the initiatives proposed in the Safer Journeys discussion document are already in place in some of Australia’s eight states and territories.

Does this mean the government will be implementing the initiatives that are being used in Australia?

The initiatives already or due to be implemented in Australia will certainly be considered. However, it is also important that Safer Journeys identifies the mix of initiatives that are best suited to New Zealand. In developing the strategy, the government is looking at public feedback, research and evidence to make sure the strategy identifies the right combination of road safety initiatives.

What is Safer Journeys?

The Safer Journeys strategy will be a guiding document for transport decision makers and will set out the actions we need to take to improve road safety over the next decade.

Consultation on a Safer Journeys discussion document ran from 18 August to 2 October 2009. The discussion document outlined priority areas for road safety as well as possible initiatives for addressing them. Feedback received will be used in the development of the strategy.

When will the Safer Journeys strategy be released?

The strategy is planned to be released in early 2010.
