Road users with a petrol vehicle contribute by petrol excise duty. Road users with a diesel vehicle (or have a vehicle that weighs over 3.5 tonnes) pay road user charges. This page allows you to calculate road user charges for your vehicle.
This calculator is for illustrative purposes only. The NZ Transport Agency is responsible for collecting (and enforcing) road user charges. If you wish to find out how much you must pay for your vehicle, contact the NZ Transport Agency(external link).
Using this calculator
To use this calculator, you first need to know your vehicle's type and its 'RUC weight'. RUC weight as the lesser of the:
- gross vehicle mass for the RUC vehicle
- maximum allowable mass for the RUC vehicle under section 4.5(1) of Part 1 of the Vehicle Dimensions and Mass Rule 2002(external link).
If you do not know your vehicle's RUC weight, please contact the NZ Transport Agency(external link). The NZ Transport Agency is responsible for collecting (and enforcing) road user charges.
All amounts in this calculator include GST, but exclude the administration fees payable when purchasing a road user charges licence.
