FIGS overview

Freight Information Gathering System (FIGS)

We have developed FIGS to provide an overview of freight movements around New Zealand, including containerised freight, rail freight, and bulk coastal freight.

FIGS builds on information currently provided by Stats NZ, while making valuable new information on freight movements available for the first time.

The information is updated 4 times a year, and follows a consistent collection methodology to allow for tracking movements and trends across time.

The information contains data from New Zealand’s largest container ports:

KiwiRail provided rail data, and shows nationwide freight movements by region and by commodity, in both tonnes and tonne-kilometres.

Key changes

  • 17/01/2023 The final changes to Supply chain dashboard made. Dashboard is now frozen. The monthly data granularity in the new format of the FIGS containers dashboard should contain most of the information. Over the next 2 years, we plan to release a series of specific reporting around supply chain issues - especially those due to the pandemic.
  • 16/12/2022 After discussions and development including some of our key stakeholders, FIGS containers dashboard has moved to a new publishing paradigm that emphasises easy access to insights. The old dashboard has been decomissioned.
  • 22/08/2022 After discussions and development including some of our key stakeholders, FIGS rail dashboard has moved to a new publishing paradigm that emphasises easy access to insights. The old dashboard has been decomissioned.
  • The Awanuia barge that shipped fuel to Auckland has ceased operation. The last voyage was 27 October 2020.
