Passenger numbers through the main airports have increased by 57% since 2006, driven by increased domestic travel, more New Zealanders departing on overseas trips, and growth in the number of overseas tourists.

Over the last 10 years, the number of overseas visitors has increased by 51%. Overseas trips by New Zealand residents have grown by 44%. Many airports have responded to growth by upgrading their facilities for aircraft and passengers.

Auckland Airport accounts for about three-quarters of international arrivals and departures. Despite growth at all 4 major international airports (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown), Auckland's share has changed little over the past 11 years.

AR004 Domestic passenger arrivals and departures through airports

Around 70% of all domestic arrivals and departures are to/from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch (hub airports). Most airports have experienced significant growth in recent years due to increases in domestic and international tourism and new flights by Jetstar and regional airlines.
