New Zealand’s Road Safety Objectives

In October 2024, the Government released New Zealand’s Road Safety Objectives, which outlines a plan over the next three years for tackling our most challenging road safety issues.

Drug driving testing

A new drug driver testing and enforcement scheme to improve road user safety.

Anti-social road use

In May 2025, the Minister of Transport and Minister of Police announced that the Government is progressing a suite of measures to deter anti-social and intimidating behaviour on our roads.

Anti-lock braking systems for motorcycles

Reducing the number of motorcyclists killed or injured on New Zealand roads by making anti-lock braking systems (ABS) or a combined braking system (CBS) mandatory.
