Summary

Crash data are derived from Traffic Crash Reports completed by police officers who attend fatal and injury crashes. The detailed information about crash circumstances and causes is extracted from these reports by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency staff and stored in their Crash Analysis System (CAS). The New Zealand crash data presented in this annual publication is extracted from the information stored in CAS.

We shall continue to migrate many of its current product from Excel Spreadsheets to Tableau Dashboards, or other web-based presentations. These shall include more information on hospitalisations, breath and blood alcohol, road user behaviour, comparative international statistics which relate to road crashes, and regular detailed reporting on a range of crash statistics.
