Maritime-related fatalities remain at a low level with recreational-related deaths generally higher than commercial-related deaths. The low number of deaths in 2018 was real — we hope it is the start of a new trend.

Reported maritime-related accidents have decreased dramatically since 1999, with the largest reductions in reported recreational-related accidents.

Reported maritime-related accidents per 100,000 population have decreased from 1999 (11.5 accidents per 100,000 population) to 4.5 in 2016.

Reported maritime commercial serious-harm injuries have reached record low levels in the past few years.

Maritime social costs only include reported deaths and commercial serious harm. In 2016, the cost was NZD$106.9 million (2015 dollars), the lowest since 2007.
