New Zealand had 4.1 million vehicles in 2017, an increase of 23% over 10 years. Light 4-wheel vehicles made up 93% of the vehicle fleet.

There is a very close relationship between the size of fleet and the population at the regional level. An upward trend across regions since 2000 is evident for all vehicle types (dominated by light passenger vehicles) and fuel types.

Since 2000, the percent of diesel-powered light commercial vehicles in the vehicle fleet has been steadily increasing (from 44% to 74% of light commercial vehicles), whereas the percent of diesel-powered light passenger vehicles, buses, and heavy trucks has remained largely unchanged.

The engine-size class that showed the greatest rate of growth is 3,000–3,999cc, but the number of these vehicles is relatively low. The 2,000–2,999cc class has shown the most growth in terms of the numbers of vehicles.
