Applications have opened for the Coastal Shipping Resilience Fund, which is intended to support investment in projects that will enhance the resilience of New Zealand’s coastal shipping sector.

Coastal shipping freight connections play a key role in New Zealand’s freight network, but these connections are vulnerable to natural hazard risks, as highlighted by recent events such as Cyclone Gabrielle.

Investments made through the fund are aimed at making the coastal shipping sector more resilient and minimising the impacts on coastal shipping connections when disruptive events strike.

The fund grants a total of $30 million through a contestable process.

Eligible funding requests include:

·       projects that support the resilience of the wider coastal shipping sector through, for example, energy and fuel, navigation aids, or the training of seafarers.

·       projects involving assets and facilities with long lifespans.

Preference will be given to proposals that include co-investment.
