6th of October

Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport has today released ‘Charging our future: National electric vehicle charging strategy for Aotearoa New Zealand’.

The strategy was developed with support from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and outlines the Government’s long-term strategic vision for a national electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure that can support a growing EV fleet, while helping New Zealand meet its climate commitments.

The Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) sets New Zealand’s commitment to increase zero-emission vehicles to 30 percent of the light vehicle fleet and reduce emissions from freight transport by 35 percent by 2035.

The strategy is aimed at helping New Zealand meet these targets by providing a coordinated approach to addressing the barriers to the roll-out of charging infrastructure.

The release of the final strategy was informed by consultation earlier this year.
