Although Auckland has the highest number of recorded accidents and Wellington is among the highest, the two main centres have the lowest number of fatal and injury accidents per 100,000 population.

In 2016, Kawerau District had the lowest rate of accidents per 100,000 population (29 accidents per 100,000 population), comfortably ahead of Upper Hutt (127) and Waimakariri (131). Westland had the highest rate (548), ahead of Waitomo (518) and Clutha (510).
