What you need to know

Getting people and things from A to B is the core function of our transport network.

The Ministry of Transport’s New Zealand Household Travel Survey shows that each year people in New Zealand spend around 1,600 million hours travelling and travel about 54,000 million km. Most of us travel in cars or vans (81 percent), and 31 percent use public transport. Around 3 million people fly around or in and out of New Zealand every month.

We import and export around 2 million containers each year and move millions of tonnes of freight around our country by road, rail, and ship each month.

The Transport Network Performance Report is a way for the Ministry to make information on how it is performing this easily available.

About the data

The Transport Network Performance Report will be updated quarterly. Across the five transport networks it measures:

  • Demand: How many people are being moved? How much freight is being moved
  • Supply: How many services are there?
  • Reliability: How much can you trust that you or your freight will get from A to B in the time you expect?
  • Safety: How much risk do you face while travelling or transporting goods?
  • User Experience: What do users think?

Information is presented without commentary. Performance is not analysed or assessed against targets.

Alongside the reports we will provide an easily downloadable file of the data they are based on.
