The Ministry’s latest Vehicle Fleet Statistics for the April to June 2013 quarter show there is a continued high level of vehicle replacement.

Registrations of new light vehicles remain at high levels – higher than registrations of used imports.

The average carbon dioxide emissions of all light vehicle types improved in the second quarter of 2013 – the average was close to 180g/km, down from 190g/kilometre in the first quarter of 2012.

Comparative figures from other parts of the world are United States (205), Australia (199), China (175) and Europe (140).

Heavy vehicle travel was 2.8 billion kilometres in the year ended December 2012 – close to the record 2008 levels of 2.9 billion kilometres. Annual travel for all vehicles is slightly below the high levels recorded in 2007 and 2008.
